Leadership

Leadership is one of the cornerstones of the Certified Public Management Program.  It is not our intention here to engage in the leadership versus management debate.  However, we want to encourage CPMs to continue to examine that question in general and, more specifically, to provide materials that will aid them in their ongoing development of both leadership and management skills and knowledge.

Towards that end, this section of the web site is devoted to providing various resources on leadership.  The following leadership resources are either contained on this web site or referenced through links to other web sites:

Leadership Articles:  We have a growing database of articles on leadership by various authors, including several by the DC area CPM instructor Matt Fairholm, now teaching at the W.O. Farber Center for Civic Leadership at The University of South Dakota.

Leadership an Overview:  This is an overview presentation on the history, theories, and literature of leadership, by Dr. Wendy Schultz of Infinite Futures.  The presentation can be viewed in an online slide show format that will open in a new window, or as an Acrobat PDF file that can be viewed online or downloaded.  Please note that the online slide show includes additional presentation notes which are not displayed as part of the PDF file.

Civic Strategies:  is a strategic planning and consulting firm that focuses on leadership in its services on public policy solutions for cities and regions.

The United National Public Administration Network (UNPAN) offers materials on leadership that are not only interdisciplinary in nature, but international and cross-cultural.  UNPAN provides many interesting readings and training materials for use on its Training Materials web site.
